Maker Faire Pt. 1–The Yarn Harlot!

This weekend was Maker Faire, and wow, I had NO IDEA how big this was! It was fantastic. The highlight for me was seeing the Yarn Harlot–which HI almost didn’t get to do!

I planned on leaving Oakland at around 9:30, to get to the Faire shortly after 10. Everything was fine, I was zipping along 880, until I hit the exit. Traffic just stopped. I crawled along the line to the parking lot for ages, which I finally reached about 30 minutes later, only to find it being directed by a bunch of idiots (actually, I had much more unkind words for them at the time, but let’s keep this family-friendly) who had no idea how to direct cars. After finally figuring out that they should TELL people if they want them to park along the side, rather than in spaces, they neglected to make sure cars had enough clearance to turn into the spots. So I was trying to back up, in order to not have the trunk sticking out into traffic (while I would like a new car, I’m fairly certain the money I’d get from insurance wouldn’t go far enough to buy a decent bicycle, much less a motorized anything) and they’re just waving traffic on behind me. And standing in my way. I was sorely tempted to hit one but, alas, manslaughter is bad.

By this point it was 11:15, and I tore into the fairgrounds and ran towards the main stage (once I found it. Don’t ask.) and managed to catch most of the Yarn Harlot’s speech. I found the bits about theta brain waves and neuroplasticity very interesting, since I have always envied Buddhist monks, but am not quite ready to, um, become one. Turns out I can knit instead–hooray!

Then there was the book signing, where I got my picture taken with the Yarn Harlot!

Me with the Yarn Harlot!

I’m holding her sock in progress, and she’s making a handpuppet out of my finished Cool Blue Ocean Waves sock. (Pattern still coming soon, I swear–really, my test knitter is almost finished and I’m working on wrangling someone into a photo shoot.)

More Maker Faire recaps coming in the next few days–there was a lot more besides the Yarn Harlot, but let’s face it, she was the highlight!

Sock Yarn!

No, I haven’t been buying more stash. Not really.

I put some yarn up for sale or trade on Ravelry, and promptly forgot about it a while back. I wasn’t using the yarn, and when placeofbits contacted me, I was certainly up for a trade! So I sent her yarn off, and last night I got home to find a package full of delicious sock yarn waiting for me.

Opal Sock Yarn

Both are Opal yarns, and the colors are perfect for me. It was the perfect end to a very long week–hooray, sock yarn!

Maker Faire!

So, this weekend I’m planning to head over to Maker Faire. I haven’t been yet–I didn’t know about it until afterwards last year–and I’m super excited. It sounds like there’s going to be tons of cool stuff and–AND!–the Yarn Harlot is going to be there. I’m so excited!

In addition to the Harlot, so are many of my co-workers, since we are going to have a booth there. So, check out Current if you’re going.
