I fringe therefore I am

I’m still fringe-ing away on the Litha shawl. I need to have it finished by tomorrow, so I can wear it to a Midsummer festival and Worldwide Knit in Public Day!

Because nothing says fun like spotting knitters in the wild, I’ll be hanging out with the Knit One One crowd in Berkeley. If you’re in the area, head over to Sweet Adeline’s Bakery and look for the knitters outside…and don’t forget to stop in and get some of their delicious baked goods.

I love knitting in public like that–people always looked so surprised to see such a large group of knitters congregating in one place. I’ll be bringing my tarot cards too, since one of my homework assignments is to do a reading for someone –I’m hoping that I’ll be able to find a couple of people who are interested.

Knitting in public and free tarot readings! What could be better?

Fringe everywhere!

No actual knitting accomplished last night, since I had an early morning meeting, which meant leaving my house at 7:45, and then a class so I didn’t get home until 10:30.

I was too fried to knit, but I did start fringing my shawl. That is a lot of fringe, y’all. I got half of it done while watching the Top Chef finale (thank god for DVR!) because I knew I wouldn’t be able to go all day today without getting spoiled.

I won’t say what happened, but I am happy with the outcome. I’m just sad there won’t be any more episodes–I’m already eager for next season.

Nearly FO: Litha Shawl

So, this weekend I finished up the knitting on the Litha Shawl.

Litha Shawl

It turned out beautifully, and all I need to do is add the fringe. Yes, I think I’m going with fringe.

Fred approves of the color. He looks good in orange, so why not the rest of us?

No Commuter Knitting!

So, lately I’ve found myself in a very strange place. A place with no commuter knitting.

I’m trying to be good-ha!-and finish things up before I start more, but that leaves me in the position of having nothing that I can easily carry in my purse.

Lace Ribbon and the Litha Shawl are both finished except for the weaving in of ends and the possible addition of fringe for the shawl.

Brilliant Retro sleeves are too big to take in a bag, and as I’m knitting them both at the same time, would result in an unbearable tangle of yarn as I attempted to juggle both sleeves and skeins.

Socks for Seely would seem portable, but as they are men’s socks they are just large enough to wind up falling off the needles every time I carry them anywhere.

My Monkey Socks would also seem portable, but the pattern is one I need to look at frequently enough that it isn’t practical.

I’ve been relying on books and podcasts to keep me occupied, but I really need to finish some of these up (as well as the sad line-up of hibernating projects) and cast on something portable! Well, that or get those sock needle protectors. That would help too.

Litha Shawl

I actually did get some knitting done, and the Litha Shawl is making great progress.

Litha Shawl

It’s getting quite long, and it knits up really quickly–I’m hoping to finish it by next weekend.I love the stitch pattern I’m using, it reminds me of armor–both strong and delicate.

The only question I have now is should I add a lace border to the end, or fringe? I’m not usually a fringe person, but I’m thinking it would really work on this. I’m afraid another lace motif would be too busy, and fringe would also remind me of the rays of the sun, which is fitting.

Now I'm getting worried…

Yep–another nigh without knitting! Scary!

I had an excuse this time, at least–I had my tarot class, which I’m very excited about. The only tough part is that the teacher has asked us not to look at our tarot book for the month we’re taking classes–eek! I love books, and while I know this is all about developing my intuition, it’s a little scary. Plus, I just got the Spiral Tarot book that goes with my deck this week, and I haven’t even had a chance to explore it yet.

I’m trying to be good, though, and avoid the books. One of the things we did last night was figure out our life and soul cards–I’m a Lovers/Lovers. That’s pretty interesting to me, since I’m probably one of the most solitary people I know. I realize it’s a card that’s also about decisions, and other things, but I’m wondering if it’s also about getting to a place where I love myself enough to be loved by others, or being open to that love.

My year card for 2008 is the Hanged Man, which is also a tough one for me. It’s all about letting go and trusting the universe and trusting myself. Something I’m not so much good at.

Anyway, with the class last night, I had just enough time to stop at a restaurant and grab some (sadly overpriced) Italian food for dinner before heading to the class. I didn’t get home until after 10, so no time for knitting.

Tonight, though. Tonight I will knit.

And the world quietly implodes

Something strange happened last night.

I? Did not knit. Not one stitch, not one row. Nothing.

This is pretty unusual. Usually, even when I’m frustrated or uninspired, I’ll pick up something and knit a row or two. But last night, not a single stitch.

This could partly be due to the fact that I finally got my Amazon order and was curled up with my new books, but I think it also has to do with how insanely exhausted I am. I still haven’t recovered fully from the stomach virus I had a week ago–I lost 10 pounds in a week, which is not so easy on my system. Plus, there are a few things up in the air that are causing me some stress, which does not make for a calm and rested Steph.

Alas, I cannot do what I really and curl up into a ball under a blanket and sleep until I’m not tired anymore. But tonight, hopefully, I’ll at least be able to knit a stitch or two.

Knitting and the Seasons

I’m on a few groups on Ravelry, and have begun tossing around the idea of a KAL based on the Wheel of the Year.

Obviously, this has a pretty heavy pagan/Wiccan/witch slant to it, but I think it has broader appeal. Knitting is at it’s core a very practical art, and surely the seasons influence our choice in projects. If only because who wants to have a heavy afghan-in-progress draped over their lap in 80 degree weather?

It would be a crafter’s choice type KAL, so you could pick whatever you wanted to work on, but where people could exchange ideas about things to make and encourage each other along. It’s still in the germinating stages right now, but I’m hoping that I’m not the only one who thinks this is a good idea!
