Oh my stars and garters!

One of the projects that I’m working on, modeled wonderfully by Fred, are the lace stockings from this summer’s Vogue. I love, love, love, LOVE these stockings! But I wasn’t wild about the white color used in the magazine–bright white and me just aren’t a good combination, especially if I want to keep them nice–so I’m using a burgendy color from Knitpicks.

Lace Stockings

The gauge I’m getting is a little loose than I normally get for socks, but these arent’t exactly intended to be hard wearing socks so I think I should be fine. Particularly considering that I’m not sure when I’d get the occasion to wear them at all, but that’s really not important. Compared to the picture in the magazine, I actually think I’m using a heavier sock yarn than they did, so it might be slightly less open and lacey. But, I’m hoping it’ll all work out. Because really, who could resist knitting something so cute?

Coriolis effect

So, the practice sock I mentioned? It’s been leading up to the real deal–my Yule socks. I was on the fence about what to do with these, but I wanted to go ahead and use up some stash yarn. I rumaged around a bit and came up with some Noro Silk Garden Sock in a white/beige/taupe colorway. It’s very winter snow feeling, which is especially lovely since we don’t get any actual snow to look at.

It’s a lot of flipping back and forth using this book; I do kind of wish it were laid out a little more simply. I’m also thinking I might need to get some stitch markers labeled A, B, D, C, etc. since I usually use scraps of yarn as stitch markers. Which is fine, but it’s been a little difficult remembering which color is which.

First Coriolis Sock

Isn’t Padma an adorable sock model? Such great contrast for white socks!

So far, these socks have gone surprisingly fast. I began this sock last weekend, and over the Thanksgiving break I managed to whip through the first sock and get a decent start on the second. Granted, I had a lot more free time than normal, but it’s been nice to feel these fly off the needles. Plus, I have to admit–the sock blanket is great incentive to work through socks quickly. I want to add more squares!

Mmmmm, bacon socks

This past week I’ve finally picked up my commuter knitting–though it’s turned more into travel/waiting/social knitting since I’ve been reading on the train. Plus, getting a seat is challenging some mornings, which stalls commuter knitting.

Bacon socks in progress

I finally finished the first bacon sock! I love these socks so much–they do look like deliciously like bacon, and the yarn is lovely to knit with. I managed to get a good start on the other one on Thanksgiving; at first I felt a little silly for pulling out my knitting but if you can’t knit at gatherings with friends, where can you? I’m brimming with sock requests and sock ideas, so I’m looking forward to getting to work my way through lots of different sock yarn and patterns in the near future.
