I’m calling it Cool Blue Ocean Waves, since the yarn and stitch pattern remind me of ocean waves rolling in and crashing onto the shore. It uses 2 skeins of Koigu PPPM in colorway 826, and is knit on US1 needles at a gauge of 64 sts and 52 rows equals 4″. Pattern is $5.00

The pattern is available on Ravelry, but if you aren’t a Ravelry member yet (And, um, why would that be? No, seriously. Why?) you can always send me an email at quirkyknitgirl@gmail.com and we’ll set something up.

The pictures don’t show how saturated the colors really are, but these socks definitely conjure up an image of the ocean. I can almost feel the cool blue waves washing up over my feet and ankles…

Keep checking back for the pattern and some better (read: modeled) photos!

I finished this a while back, but I haven’t had a chance to take any good pictures. This picture isn’t good either, but I figured since it’s Litha I needed to wear this and take at least one photo.

Ignore that it’s crappily taken in the corner of my office.

The shawl turned out great, and it works to wear in many different ways–including tied around my waist like you see it here! Hopefully I’ll get a chance to take some better pictures this weekend, and work on writing up the pattern.

I’m still fringe-ing away on the Litha shawl. I need to have it finished by tomorrow, so I can wear it to a Midsummer festival and Worldwide Knit in Public Day!

Because nothing says fun like spotting knitters in the wild, I’ll be hanging out with the Knit One One crowd in Berkeley. If you’re in the area, head over to Sweet Adeline’s Bakery and look for the knitters outside…and don’t forget to stop in and get some of their delicious baked goods.

I love knitting in public like that–people always looked so surprised to see such a large group of knitters congregating in one place. I’ll be bringing my tarot cards too, since one of my homework assignments is to do a reading for someone –I’m hoping that I’ll be able to find a couple of people who are interested.

Knitting in public and free tarot readings! What could be better?

It’s getting quite long, and it knits up really quickly–I’m hoping to finish it by next weekend.I love the stitch pattern I’m using, it reminds me of armor–both strong and delicate.

The only question I have now is should I add a lace border to the end, or fringe? I’m not usually a fringe person, but I’m thinking it would really work on this. I’m afraid another lace motif would be too busy, and fringe would also remind me of the rays of the sun, which is fitting.

First of all, hi to all the new folks who’ve found me via Battlestar Galactica links. If any of you are making Starbuck’s Mandala Hats, please share pictures! I would LOVE to see them! This blog isn’t entirely fandom knitting, but I can feel a bit more of that coming on so I hope you’ll stick around.

In other knitting news, I’ve been hopelessly busy this week so there’s not much to report. And I keep falling asleep early before I can take pictures (oops)! I finished the body of the Sawtooth skirt, and have enough edging, I think–I’ll be adding the elastic and sewing it together in class this week.

I’ve also begun the Holly Jacket from the latest Interweave Knits. I’m subbing in Knitpicks yarn, in a pretty shade of green. So far it’s working up nicely, and I’m looking forward to seeing how it turns out.

Oh, and I’m totally psyched for the new Battlestar! I can’t wait!

Remember that extremely bright, primary-colored yarn I posted a while back? Well, I finally finished the project it was meant for.

I present to you, Starbuck’s Mandala Hat:

For those of you who are looking confused, this is the first of (hopefully) many designs inspired by fandom. In this case, Battlestar Galactica. Starbuck (played by the always kick-ass Katee Sackhoff) paints this mandala in shades of yellow, red, and blue on the walls of her apartment on Caprica, not realizing that it has much greater significance in the search for Earth and her destiny.

I loved the colors and spiral-pattern of the design, and I thought it would make a perfect hat. It didn’t take long to make, once I sorted everything out with the spirals and stopped putting it aside for other things. Keep an eye out for better (modeled!) photos and a link to the pattern later this week.
