Wednesday Wanderings: Knit Anonymous Manifesto

Wednesday, 23. June 2010 18:49

This week is very heavy on internet and community management links. Interesting.

Other people have internet manifestos too. And they’re good. This makes  me happy.

My colleague, Livia, had a great, short post in response to an ad week article that referenced community management as a marketing job. I totally agree.

Best. Cease and desist letter. EVER.

I mentioned this previously, but the Boston Globe had a great piece on anonymous internet commenters.

Speaking of commenting, I also liked Derek Powazek’s post on commenting policies.

My friend Andie sent me an interesting piece on why fans are better than patrons.

To break the streak of community management posts, here’s a post about knitting your own lightsaber. I may or may not be planning to do this as soon as I can.

Wednesday Wanderings: Community Film Grasshopper

Wednesday, 9. June 2010 4:58

Yes, I’ve been a naughty blogger and failed to provide you with links to the various and sundry links I’ve stumbled across. I’m sure you’ve all felt so empty without it. Once again, it’s heavy on the food. You’d think I like to bake or something…

I don’t have Meyer lemons or know how to make marmalade but that doesn’t stop me from wanting to make this Meyer lemon marmalade int he slightest.

How to make a dry erase board that’s way cuter than your average whiteboard. I LOVE this so much.

Care for some Grasshopper Pie? This looks likely to be terrible or AWESOME, and I think I might have to make ti to find out.

An interesting piece on community guidelines–the choice isn’t whether to have them, it’s whether or not you make them public.

Root beer float cupcakes! With ice cream! These are darling, and I despeartely need an excuse to make them.

My love of all things vintage and general eco-friendliness collide sometimes. So I was thrilled to find a tutorial on how to make a women’s handkerchief.

More vintage recipes. It may be retro, but these Lunch-Box Pineapple Crusties look totally delicious.

I don’t know how I haven’t run across the Bedchel test for women in film before, but I hadn’t. Unsurprisingly, it’s awesome. Also, I’m pretty sure I just developed a huge crush on the woman in the video. Smart feminists for the win!

This apricot almond tart looks amazing. Seriously. I don’t even know if I’d want to eat it, or just sit there and admire how pretty it looks.

Wednesday Wanderings: Facebook Community Princess

Wednesday, 26. May 2010 7:38

From my wanderings through the interent this week, today’s post is chock full of social media and community goodness. And, as always, cake.

To start off with something nice and gloomy, here’s a theory on why the world is a mess. I’d throw in something about entitlement, but other than that, it seems pretty sound.

From the inspiring craft files, another adorable sewing project from Green Apples–I love this top. I’m also loving her sewing tips and advice–I really need to learn to sew actual garments with patterns. And make muslins, apparently, since based on what I’ve read, most patterns run large.

PG&E deleted critical comments from their Facebook–certainly a facepalm moment, and another sign that there are more companies moving into the social media space that really don’t understand how it works and how to interact.

Perhaps those companies should consider reading this post on the Engagement Myth. Hint: it’s not enough to SAY you’re listening. You actually have to do something, too.

I really enjoyed this post from a model on beauty and body image. It really hit hom with me–I wish that we could start embracing all body types rather than drawing these lines in the sand about what ‘real’ women look like or what is objectively attractive. Becuase when we do that, someone is always going to wind up hurt.

Failing that, you could always take a look at what Disney Princesses teach girls about love. (Warning: this may send you into a feminist rage if you think about it too hard.)

CosmicPluto has a new cardigan pattern up. I love it, and it fits perfectly with my new obsession with knitting things out of fingering weight sock yarn.

We talk about the obesity epidemic–but is it really just a sign of the success of capitalism? Things to ponder.

More to ponder: the perils of pageview journalism. When everything is driven by traffic and metric, what storie are going to be left out in the cold?

Need cheering up after those? Why not have some honey chocolate cake or a one egg wonder cake? Yummy!

Wednesday Wanderings: Lavender Dahlia Monogram

Wednesday, 12. May 2010 7:47

Some finds from my wanderings this week….

A gorgeous quilled monogram. What do you mean, I don’t need another craft? I HAVE TO LEARN TO DO THIS.

Lavender Honey Drop Cookies anyone? I desperately want to make these, as well as lavender and rose petal honey, but I’m not sure where to find fresh lavender and rose petals that aren’t sprayed with pesticides. I’d love to grow them myself, but it’s not an option, so I’m not sure. But surely, somewhere in the Bay Area, we must have edible flowers.

Not Martha has some adorable felt dahlia corsages for Mother’s Day. Or any other corsage worthy occassion, really.

Look! Vintage style hats! I’ve mentioned wanting to bring back hats, yes? In case you’ve missed it….more hats, please!

Confessions of a Pagan Soccer Mom has some ideas for making herbal oils. Mmm, I smell ideas.

Speaking of food, how about some sweet and salty herbed shortbread? Or perhaps some maple yogurt pound cake?

Wednesday Wanderings: Victorian Facebook Crumble

Wednesday, 28. April 2010 8:14

This week’s links are actually overwhelmingly awesome! I love it when the Universe surprises me like that.

Okay, there’s one depresssing one, so let’s get a look at how Facebook is taking over the internet and why that’s frightening out of the way.

Everyone scared yet? Sorry.

Here, have some chocolate hazelnut and coconut mousse cake to cheer you up.

Or perhaps some blueberry rhubarb crumble.

You can eat them while you watch this clip from the BBC’s Victorian Farm. So fascinating! I must go find more.

I also found this fascinating blog post about buying (and wearing) vintage fashion. I’ve been eyeing all sorts of lovely vintage or vintage repro dresses for some time, but always ran up against the problem of things that would not fit because they assume proportions I don’t have. I don’t know why the concept of shapewear didn’t occur to me until now, but it didn’t. And, amazingly enough, I think I may actually attack this with a *plan* and start there, so I have proper measurements in hand before I start buying dresses or sewing clothes.

Along similar lines, I’m also really enjoying a new series, Fit to Flatter, that talks about selecting and modifying knitwear to suit your body shape. I had to poll my friends to figure out what mine actually was, because I’m generally horrible about things like that, or having any realistic idea of what I look like. But I have high hopes for creating some knitwear that fits well and looks great!

Finally, for Bay Area folks, check out Knit One One’s May Magic craft sale for fibery and crafty goodness! This Saturday, and conveniently located next to Sweet Adeline’s, where there are many delicious baked goods to be had.

Wednesday Wanderings: Let Them Eat Cake!

Wednesday, 21. April 2010 8:28

Surprisingly enough, this week’s collection of links includes a few serious thing, and then lots of things I want to bake. Mm, baking. Possibly, I need to find more people to feed baked goods too, however. I think my office and coven might get sick of me shoving cake at them.

From the Crunchy Chicken, some ways to avoid cancer-causing toxins.

The Green Phone Booth questions–do you really own your body parts? The answer may surprise you.

Nil Doctrine has a great rant about those who ignore politics yet insist they’ve got it all figured out.

Smitten Kitchen had a recipe for lime yogurt cake with blackberry sauce.

Not Martha offered cobbler baked in jars.

Then my coworker sent me a link to Oprah’s site where I found, among many, many tasty desserts, Rhubarb, Ginger and Almond Tart with Lemon Creme Fraiche. And Pumpkin Fritters with Vanilla Ice Cream.  Plus Lemon Creme Fraiche Cake, and a Bittersweet Chocolate Basil Tart with Honey Grapefruit Sauce. To top it all off, there was even a Love Goddess Cake.

Yep. I definitely need to find more people to bake for.

Wednesday Wanderings: Happy Jam Anonymity

Wednesday, 14. April 2010 8:01

From the News

Jon Stewart wisely points out that Fox News no longer feels the need to accurately report facts. Why do we as a society let this go on? Why is there not massive outcry on BOTH sides of the aisle?

The New York Times talks about news sites reconsidering anonymous commenting.

In related news, Gawker discusses if anonymous commenters can be outed by a news organization.

Green Files

Huffington Post discusses issues with food safety.

Yes! Magazine talks about local economies and the ways they can close the distance between us.

Treehugger covers a study that finds–shockingly, I know–that the things we buy aren’t what make us happy.

The Archdruid Report talks about the Twilight of the Machine.

Yes! Magazine talks about breaking the curse of bigness.

General Awesomeness

My friend Andie discusses being present in an excellent post.

Smitten Kitchen posts an easy jam tart recipe. Om, nom, nom.

This doesn’t really qualify as awesome, but worth thinking on. Peak Oil Hausfrau points out that all that money we structure our society on and use to prop up our systems...is really just numbers floating around in space. Sobering thought.

Wednesday Wanderings: Feeling Funky Like a Monkey

Wednesday, 7. April 2010 7:32

Another week, another list of links I probably won’t have time to blog about properly! (Also, bonus points to anyone knows what song the title came from–and which link made me choose it. No cheating with Google!)

News and Other Depressing Things

The Huffington Post as an interesting look at how the Evangelical maintream fuels milita groups and other extremists.

Club Orlov takes a look at collapsing competatively.

Darkness is usually thought of as bad…but could it actually be good for us? And are we screwing ourselves over by our artificially lit surroundings?

She’s Crafty

Nutty Creations released the On the Wings of a Dove pattern. Gorgeous! Definitely going on my list.

The Wall Street Journal takes a look at truckers taking up quilting and knitting due to more downtime between loads. So. Awesome.

Not Martha has a post on making some incredibly detailed and awesome chocolate surprise eggs. I’m not sure I’d have the patience, but they are pretty impressive.

Nom Nom Nom

I’m saving this one for summer–Pink Lemonade Cake!

Or, how about a breakfast cake? Okay, so not technically cake, but still looks tasty, in a weird kind of way.

But not as tasty as coconut mango pancakes. Yum!

Oh–and hey, I wrote a story. You should read it and comment. Yep.

Wednesday Wanderings: Hedonic Cake

Wednesday, 31. March 2010 7:42

From the blogosphere this week…..lost of environmental news and cake! So much cake.

Treehugger suggests the way to improve environmental journalism is to keep confronting the obious, over and over again.

A look at the hedonic treadmill reveals that we kinda suck at knowing what makes us happy. (Hint: it isn’t more stuff.)

Stuff might not make us happy, but I bet this almond macaroon torte with chocolate frosting totally will.

Huffington Post asks if fast food culture is speeding up our mind.

If that’s depressing, why not have some cake? How about some Wildflower Honey Cake with Berry Compote? Perhaps some Chai Spiced Honey Cake? Or maybe a Spiced Honey Cake with Caramelized Apples?

Okay, now I’m kind of hungry….

Wednesday Wanderings: Flower pot work week sleepover

Wednesday, 24. March 2010 8:18

I’m running late this am, so no nicely separated lists. Think of this as an example of what it would be like to live in my brain. Then hide.

Annie Leonard (of “The Story of Stuff”) talks about community. Awesome.

Green Apples sewed up the cutest pants. I’m still not sure if those would look good on me but I kind of want to get the pattern and find out. SO CUTE.

File under depressing: how climate change deniers spread disinformation.

Seed paper for Ostara! Okay, so it’s too late to whip up a batch for Ostara, but it’s still a cute idea.

Another sad post about climate change, and the fact that, well, all the news about public opinion and solutions is depressing.

Speaking of being green, The Green Phone Booth asks what kind of green you are?

And back to depressing. Most Africans (which, for the record, Africa is one of the continents that has contributed the least to climate change) blame themselves for climate change. Meanwhile, we’re all stuffing our fingers in our ears pretending it’s not going on. Stay classy, America.

If you’re in the Oakland/Berkeley area, Ghost Town farms is holding an open house this Sunday. I didn’t realize how close this is to me–I can walk there–so I’m definitely planning on checking it out. Maybe I’ll even try biking. (Or not. I do want to get there alive.)

The Pioneer Woman has this recipe for flower pot ice cream cakes. They are adorable in a women-who-lunch, tea party, I clipped the recipe from Women’s Day kind of way. And you know what? I still want to make them. SO THERE.

Someone at the NYT finally wised up the fact that the GOP has lost all sense of class or civility. Next up: grass is green, and gravity? Totally exists, dude.

Turning the Wheel talks about the benefits of a shorter work week. Turns out? It’s not only better for productivity and individuals, it’s also better for communities as a whole. So why are we all still working 40+ hour weeks?

Over at Huffington Post, a blog talks about one man’s attempt to build community by having sleepovers with his neighbors. Interesting!

Finally…you know what? There’s no need for elaboration here. I will just say: chicken apple rosemary pot pie.

Hope you enjoy! Like these? Hate them? Think I should make flower pot ice cream cakes? Let me know in the comments!
